Bad Weather

Hey folks, use the weather radar link to take a look at what is coming. TV says a tornado watch is out until midnight.

I think we could use the rain but, not all at once. One good thing is that the rain the weather people have been saying for the last seven days is really here today.

Keep an eye to the sky this evening.

Looks Like There Are Clearing The Tree's

Just wanted to put an update on the Motel. I saw today that Mr. Crull had a lot of heavy equipment at the site of the soon to be coming I hope, motel site. They took out tree's and shrubs in this area. Looks like they are smoothing out the land.

I did see an article in the Janesville paper on the this issue. Hope things work out.

POT HOLES- PLEASE FIX

Can someone please fill in the holes now. The weather has been real nice and above the 32 degree mark now for a while. I know that the weather causes problems every year (we do live in Wisconsin) but, please patch them up soon. We need to save our cars from the front end alignments and other things. West Main and Second street has to be the worst. Thanks.

Motel Coming to Evansville?

Yes, after all these years the word on the street is a motel is going up next to Romano's Restaurant on Union St. The word is the owner of the Citgo Station is going to start building this year.

This will be a nice addition to the landscape in this area. The site use to be the location of Cornwell Welding shop back in the old days. It is right on the curve. It will be nice to have a place for people that come from out of town for weddings and other functions to stay at instead of having to go out of town. I don't know what the Motel will have to offer like a pool or fitness area at this time but, when I hear I will let ya know.

It's great to have business's investing in Evansville.

Curriculum Coordinator?

A Curriculum Coordinator position was listed on a document at the last school board meeting. It was put with some other teaching positions that the board approved. Why was this put on the same document? Does our District Administrator want to add this AGAIN. I thought the school board made this perfectly clear a few years ago that it was not needed. The principals could take over the job.

One would think that the curriculum would be made up by the teacher right? Does our district really need another administrative position added for some $70,ooo and that is only part-time the document said? How many new hire teachers could be added for the price of another administrator? Could this money be used elsewhere? One must remember that this administrative position is a reoccurring cost every year!

Mr. Woulfe talks about this as a potential school board member too.

What do you think?

Main Street Is Going To See A Face Lift

April 2ND I hear is the date that Main St. from First to Madison St will start to be tore up. The road is going to be taken out and some initial work done. After that the Main St from Madison to the Bridge will be tore up. They are going to remove the bricks that are underneath the road now and they will be recycled and used for the new brick street that is coming.

After some initial work they will come back and start to take out the sidewalks and everything else right up to the business's front doors. It sounds like it is going to look real nice when all is done. If you have not seen the plans you should stop at city hall and take a look.

I hope everyone will continue to support our local business's downtown while the construction project is going on. It is so important to help them out.

Election for School Board Almost Here

April 3rd is the big day to get out and vote. I hope you will support Richard Woulfe and Milissa Hamman. I have said and believed for some time that they are the right people to help us the public, on the school board.

I hope you have read the views of these two in this weeks Evansville Review. I think they have taken the right approach to the important issue's before all of us.

Please be sure to vote.

Ex-Sgt. Fitters Now we know why you resigned

Ex-police sergeant charged--

UPDATE: 3-10-07

What kind of comment is it when a police officer says he "misunderstood the law" How do you say that when you go in the back door of the tavern and get an envelope with the money in it. Do ya think everything is on the up and up when you do that??? Most vender's that sell alcohol go in the front door. Why did he not go to the other bars in town and sell to them then? He only made $3.00 a bottle but, he was hurting for money because of a divorce. $3.00 a bottle is going to get you back on track. You know he did have the right to remain silent and I think that would have been the best thing he could have done instead of making comments like he did in the paper and on TV.......

An Evansville police officer who resigned last week is charged with selling liquor without a license after allegedly making and marketing "Apple Pie Ever clear." See the Janesville Gazette for more....

New Fire Dept, Move Police Dept.

It sounds like a new building is coming soon for our Fire Dept. I have been told that one is needed to handle all of the equipment as they have out grown this building. Now no price tag has been told to us yet however and there are other things happening with this move.

The Evansville Police Dept. is said to be going to move into the current Fire Dept. when they build a new one. The Police Dept. has been appraised for $178,000.00 and the current fire Dept was $251,000.00. I think it would be great to have the police department back down town. I know they need the room also. They are in a "house" that was actually the Wisconsin Gas Company payment center years ago. Before that it was the site of a A&W Root beer restaurant. This is going way back you know, and it was one of those that you drove up and under a overhang that was all around the sides and front of the building and the waitress came out to your car.

I have heard and reported before that it is said that the Evansville EMS is going to be moved into the old Dean aware center. This building is located right across the street from the Fire Dept. and where city hall has made a temporary move while construction is being done at the old city hall.

What do you think about all of this?

Build More Schools????????

I just got done reading the Evansville Review article on the school boards progress on this building study. I hope everyone See's what it is saying.

First of all I guess the maintenance that our schools get needs to be better. Second the study says how many more rooms are needed and square feet that the Plunket study says we need. Third of all the new high school was just built how many years ago and they did not have the ADA issued taken care of.

On the first subject maintenance. One would think that any issues of replacing windows, furnace's, roofs and etc. would be a ongoing item in a budget. It seems that if you want to keep a building going you have to preform day to day and year to year maintenance. I think some of this is being done but, some of the big ticket items have not been budgeted and or approved for.

Some of these buildings have been here since my dad went to high school and he is 80 years old now. How do you think these buildings kept going. They took care of them.

Second subject on the Plunkett study. It's a study first of all. You mean to tell me that the staff can't decide how much square feet is needed. It appears they seem to have got along good so far. It is like someone telling me that based on my family needs I would have to have a house that was so many square feet. I think I can do that. I don't need to have the average of some other houses to decide what I needed. I guess I would say that if rooms are needed add them on. I don't think we need to spend millions of dollars on a entire building.

What is with this ADA thing at the middle school. They have an elevator and ramps that was added several years ago. I don't understand what that means. Now, they tell us the High School does not meet all the ADA requirements. Who is suppose to make sure these things are done. This school was just built a few years ago for how many million.

I hope everyone goes to the Board meeting next Monday and we get some answers and different options that what has been put out there so far. I see no option of adding on some class rooms.

Is Spring Coming next Week???

If the weather guy is right I will be itching to start in the garden. Yes, this weekend is suppose to be in the 40's and they say for next week into the 50's. This just makes me want to start putting those plans I have been working on over the winter into action. I mean, all the books and shows I have been watching about gardening that gave me all kinds of ideas. Lots of work was done last year but, more space is still available you know so it has to be done.

Where do you get the flowers and bushes? Well, there are a few places right here around Evansville. Enchanted Gardens at the end of Cemetery & Territorial road has a lot of choices of all kinds of garden stuff. I really like the choices of trees they have. I have bought several over the years and all have done great. If hosta's are to your liking you will love the many many choices they have. All kinds of bushes too. They have a large selection of many different kinds.

The herb selection is always good too. Sometimes it is hard to find herb's that have a good start early in the spring but, they seem to have them with a good start. Water plants and many different kinds of berries are also here. I think the prices are good considering the size and that they have always survived for me. I believe that the business has been sold but, I hope it still continues as a green house.

Prairie Plant Farm on County C just west of Evansville also has very good plants, bushes, trees and flowers. I love the hanging baskets that they make up. The selection is getting more and more each year. Staff is very helpful and the plants hold up if you take care of them.

As far as K&W in Janesville goes, the prices are a little high for me. Now don't take me wrong because there are certain things I get there. They have some plants that I can't find other places. I also have bought stones there for paths and stepping stones. They have a good selection of these. Trees and bushes are there too. When they have sales you can get a bargin there.

Well, I hope spring is coming to us soon. I know that I will not be able to get started this soon but, I can get in the mood for my spring planting.

"What's for Dinner"

Where do you go out for dinner tonight. Well, I have to say this can be a difficult subject. I want to keep people in Evansville but, I have to say some of the places here have a hard time keeping me here with a few exceptions. I do go to many differnt places out of town but, for your dinning needs in Evansville give these a try.

The Night Owl does has good food. It does take some time to get your dinner on Friday nights even if you go early but it's worth the wait. They are open for lunch and dinner. Greg is trying to make some additions to the place by adding a new dinning area downstairs. I do here that the price tag may be a problem though. He has excellent steak sandwiches and burgers. The beer fries are great. Give it a try.

The Evansville Country Club is a nice place to go on a Friday night. I see they are going to be open on some additional days. The fish on occasion is a hit or miss on weather it will be cooked fully or not. I hope they will work on this because I really like to go there. They have a great salad bar. It has salad and all the fixings and they have potato, mac, Cole slaw, beets and other items that make it a good variety. The soup is out of this world. The other menu and speacials have always been good too. I do want you to try it. It is a very nice place to have a drink and dinner. They also have the room to hold you family get togethers or buisness parties. Oh, they also have about the best golf coarse in southern Wisconsin.

Romano's Restaurant. Frank his wife and kids are great people. They have been here for many years now. You could not ask for a nicer family run business. I have never had a bad meal there. The pizza is a great taste and many different toppings are there for you. They even have a new Sicilian pizza, thick crust so need to call ahead for this one. The crust has to rise and cook for a while because it is thick. Hamburgers, ravioli, tortellini and many other choices await you. They have about the best looking bar area in town. Stop by they have a nice dinning area or you can have them deliver. They are open for lunch and dinner. By the way they are adding onto the bar area for yet more dinning space.

Give these buisness a try and tell me what you think.

Evansville Police Sergeant Resigns

Go to the Janesville Gazette paper for story.

Here We Go Again "Schools Open" When roads are Bad

What is with the school. Once again the road conditions are as bad as ever and Evansville is holding school. I can't believe that this happened again.

Winds are blowing so hard that "white outs" are making it so you can't see 100 feet in front of you. Snow is drifting across the roads causing so many accidents that the Sheriff's Department can't keep up. Tow trucks are hours away from getting to some accidents. People are being injured in these accidents all over Rock County. Is Evansville Schools open, you bet. But it gets better.

After all your kids are at school and the road conditions are getting worse we send the kids back home again 5 hours later. Semi trucks are jack knifing on Hwy 14 and Hwy 26 and more and more accidents are occurring.

This has to stop. Use your head and call off school. Make the day up at a later time. No person should have to be injured just to get to school. That includes students, staff, parents and the bus drivers.

Congratulations to Dick & Milissa

Well, the election is over for now. Our candidate's Woulfe & Hamann are going to go onto the big election day that will soon be upon us.

I hope everyone takes the time to really look at these two. The amount of time and dedication they both put in researching and providing the "true" numbers and stats is what this school district needs. With this school study project really taking all kinds of turns we need people like these two to sort it all out. I am amazed that this firm hired to look into this has basically said we need 30-40 million dollars worth of remodeling and or building. I am not convinced.

I have read on the Observer a comment about if this firm Plunket and something or other is going to do more that just do this study. That is, will they be the ones we use if something is built or remodeled? Well, I believe they will. Should the district have had someone else to do a study? What about our own people from within or in the district? I am sure there are many people that are well qualified that could have assisted. The district is always having public committee's doing one thing or another such as the budget process this year. Why not this study?

Twenty four thousand dollars was spent by this school district to have the study done. Money that I believe was not well spent. The study pointed out many issues that could and probably were already on the minds of the staff and others. I still can't believe that this study says a classroom needs to be such and such a size. My goodness, classes have been held in all of our schools for years and everything seemed to be just fine. Now Plunket says they are too small. I never have seen anything like this.

People, you need to pay close attention to this issue and become involved. This is your school district and money. You need to let the board members know what you think.

You need board members like Dick and Milissa to help a couple of the other board members keep things in check.

I wish I had a job of a weather man

As my old buddy use to say "Holy Cow" . I heard on Friday from our local Madison weather guys everything from 3-5 inches to 20 inches for the entire weekend. Charlie Sartino said maybe an inch or so on Friday evening. Well let me tell ya we got about 7 inches in Evansville last night.

I have been saying for years that they should put a window in the weather office at all of the TV stations so they could see what is going on. Maybe, they might want to give one of us in Evansville a call or better yet set up a weather station in Evansville. Maybe they would get better information for those of us "down south".

The roads were not too bad this morning. That is, the main ones. The side roads had not even been touched much in the early hours of the morning. Tonight is yet another story.

They are calling for a lot of snow tonight. The wind is going to be blowing and that will make it real bad for anyone that HAS to be out. You know there are the people that work evenings and the old night shift. Be careful.

Hey, take a look at the web site I posted as a link today. It is about the best one I have seen yet. I set it up just for us in Evansville. You can switch radar sites easy on this site. One of my buddies put me onto it. I like the labels it puts on the storm cells and shows you what way it is moving to. Have fun with it.

Angus House is gone, AKA (The Old Coach House)

I am saddened to see this old restaurant gone. At least no one got hurt. There was 3 apartments upstairs that people lived in. It looks like about everything was destroyed in the fire from those apartments. The owners now are from Brodhead. I would like to say to them my thoughts are with them. I know it must be very hard on them. When you have a business and try to build it up it involves your hopes, dreams and way of life. That all went up in smoke and flames on February 13, 2007 in the early morning hours.

I remember this restaurant as the Coach House. I can remember when Lonnie Gregnono, (spelling may be off) owned the restaurant. I remember that you could hardly move in there on Friday and Saturday nights. It was the place to go out to eat. The food was great, the people were friendly and the staff knew how to serve you. After Lonnie left the Allens owned it. Tom and Terry kept a fine tradition going. People still gathered just as before but, maybe a little smaller crowd. Things change ya know, over the years on going out for dinner. Also, people started going to Janesville and Madison for dinner too. Years later Brady Bauer and his mom and dad got into the restaurant business. Brady fixed things up and changes things around inside in the bar area. It really looked nice.

I can say that many a business and people had gatherings in that restaurant over the years. I know of at least 2 waitresses that have been working there for more than 25-30 years. Mrs. Falstad and Kathy Crull. They were so nice to you when you went there for your meal. It says something when people like this would stay working at the same place for many different owners over the years. They must have loved the job. The people that ate there also were faithful all of these years.

The old place will be missed.

Wisconsin Basketball Badgers Are #1

Hey, this is a first for the badgers. Never before has the Badger basketball team been in this spot before. Hard work and dedication by the players, coaches and fans made this all possible. What an honor for everyone.

Keep up the good work guys.

Get out And VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday is the day to vote for our school board. I recommend Woulfe and Hamman. They have the time and have gotten involved long before the election was thought of. I like how they both research and provide facts not fiction at board meetings. I know they have provided cost figures on the 1/2 day kindergarten and the 4 year old kindergarten issues.

They have the time to dedicate to this position. Please get out and vote on Tuesday, February 20Th. It is your right and obligation. How else can you make comments for or against something that interests you if you don't even vote for someone to represent you. Thanks.

Get Involved in Your School District

A study was just completed not to long ago on the needs for space and projections on the growth of our student population. The study also told us the problems with maintenance issues and what room the company and the staff thought was needed. Many people don't have good thoughts on this study.

Now is the time for you to get involved. Meetings are coming up at the building and grounds meeting and others. People, you must start paying attention to what is going on. Many say they do not agree with what is being brought out. Please take a look on the Observers web site and learn more. I don't want to repeat things so see Dick's site.

If you don't watch out we may be building a new school. I don't think we need one. I can't believe that the company that did the study is the same one that will be used to build a school too if that was to happen. Does not make sense to me but, we will have to wait and see. Start attending meetings and let the board members know what you think.

When do the schools close due to bad weather?

Many have commented on this very question this week. Evansville School District finally decided to close school Monday because the buses would not start according to Supt. Carvin. The issue many people have is what would have happened if the buses would have started? School would have been held?

First of all the bus company said they can always get the buses going but, it was too cold to have the kids out. Parents and others said it was too cold to have kids out waiting for a bus and for kids to be walking to school. The Supt. of schools says they use a windchill thing and how many minutes you should be out. Well let me tell you some kids are out longer than this 10 minute thing Supt. Carvin talks about. Some kids walk for 20 minutes. They don't have buses to ride.

I think the School Board should take a look at this policy. Common sense goes a long way here I think, and it was not used in this case. The parents also had a problem about how long it took for our district to call school off. They would like to have more notice so they can arrange for daycare. I don't blame them in this case. There was at least 30 schools that already said on Sunday that schools were closed. Our Supt. Carvin did not make the call until after 5am Monday morning. That is just not right.

Now the kicker is that this day that was missed will have to be made up. What ever happened to having 3 or 4 days built into the school year for bad weather days? Ya know, the teachers have all kinds of "Staff Developement Days" and those are built in. What do you think??

Going to get cold tonight

Hey folks bundle up tonight. Weather people say it is going to -5 and the winds are going to be blowing too. Please make sure you care for your animals. Feed and water them more often in this weather. Shelter is so important too. I always made a gravy, bread and dog food casserole for my dogs when it was so very cold out. Heat up everything and take it out to him. One in the morning and one at night.

Keep you car out of the wind. This helps so much so your car will start in the morning. If you have a garage now is the time you wished you would have cleaned it out this fall so you could have put it in there now. Let the car warm up when you go out and start it up in the morning. The fluids need to get going just like you do. A good battery is a must. Take you car to Napa Auto or your service station and have them test it out. You don't want to be stuck with a dead battery.

Another little handy items is one of the battery jumper chargers that you keep in your car in case your battery goes dead on you. You charge the little thing up and when you need it you just hook it up to your battery and start up the old car. They work great. The only thing is to make sure you check it every once in a while to make sure it is charged.

What's Up

Gas prices!!!! What happened to make the gas go up 16 cents in just a couple days. My word, it was down to $1.99 and jumped back up in no time. You know the thing that bothers me is that prices go up without the gas tanker truck even coming into the station. How do they do it?

Now, I saw today that all of the stations in Evansville; Mobil, Landmark and BP are all at $2.09. Citgo on the otherhand is at $2.15. What's up with that?

New Stores and Resturants Coming Soon?

The land at the corner of Hwy 14 & County M may soon have a new look. The word is that Helegsen Holdings is looking at developing this land. There has been rumors of several different businesses that may show up here. What I have heard is; Taco Bell, Culvers, a car dealership and a bowling alley with restaurant. This is the same bowling alley that was trying to get approval for a site in Union Township at the corner of County M and Territorial road. That did not get far with that site just like the other site that was by Ace Hardware next to the Morning ridge subdivision. That site was too close to the houses and was wisely not approved. I think the same with the Territorial road site. There was house's proposed to go in behind the bowling alley. I don't think this would have been a good thing either. Maybe just maybe this new site will be the ticket.

Now, there sounds like there will be a change in how you get by this new business park when you are driving on highway 14 to Janesville. You see, the word is that a Round-a-Bout will be installed at John Lindemann Dr. and Hwy. 14. This is what the State of Wisconsin is saying the city should put in to make this project work. They don't want a 4 way intersection you see. This Round-a-Bout will work in a pretty slick way. Here's how it works.

You would approach this circular intersection and slow to a speed of 15mph. You merge in to the right and proceed around the circle until you come to the street you want to get off on. You would stay on the outside part of the circle so you just have to turn off onto the street. Anyone entering the Round-a-Bout has to yield to the vehicles already going in circles. You see it's not too bad. The weirdest thing I see is that in order to make a left onto John Lindemann Dr. you have to turn right into the Round-a-Bout and proceed around the circle to get to you left turn. Now the good thing is that you don't have to stop, accidents are suppose to be fewer and if you have ever had someone tell you that you do nothing but go in circles you can now do just that.

Well, we will have to wait and see what we get in for these new business's. Hopefully, this will happen this summer and we will have some new places to go have fun and get something to eat.

Talk of the city

This post is here to talk about your views and mine on any subjects of interest in Evansville. I am just starting out so hang on for some stories to start this up. Thanks for viewing..
